Things happen. People change. And getting a little distance from yourself helps you to see the truth that has been before you the entire time.  My art hasn’t changed, and it probably won’t very much. What has changed is my perception of the work.

After a brief roll with the existential crisis that plagues most new mothers, I was called to lay my work out on the table. Literally.

Check it out and play along, if you want. With this exercise, I asked myself 3 questions:

  1. Which pieces do you think are the most successful?
  2. Which pieces did you enjoy making the most?
  3. Out of those pieces, who really is your target market?

My final analysis: I make fine art for children …and the occasional inner child.

Butterfly Ballerina

How did I not see it sooner?

That truth was a little hard to take at first. I am not sure why I felt a little let down. I suppose most artist’s goals of showing in galleries and living in the upper escheleon of society died the moment I realized my truest calling. I had to let it go.  Now I aspire to dominate nurseries and children’s rooms everywhere! The funny thing is how at peace I am. I know I am going the right direction.

So, you will see a lot of changes in the near future here at Cotton Studios. A total re-branding. Hang on for the ride. This is going to be fun!!

Now if anything you read and saw sparked some insight, I would love for you to share it here.

Your work is wonderful….just because your art is pleasing for a child’s room only means you have excellent work in that genre and it would be hard to surpass your talent. Your work can hang in any gallery!!!!! I love the princess and the pea …. a long time love here. The sock monkey is a hoot!
